几种蜱传疾病在美国呈上升趋势
尽管美国自 1966 年以来就已诊断出蜱传巴贝西亚原虫病病例，但这种疾病直到 2011 年才开始在全国范围内通报。美国疾病控制与预防中心（CDC）前五年的巴贝西亚原虫病监测报告显示，该病的发病率出现了惊人的增长。
巴贝西亚原虫是一种细胞内寄生虫，可感染红细胞（RBC）（见图 1A）。感染的结构和致病机理与引起疟疾的疟原虫相似。不过，疟原虫主要通过蚊子传播，在美国并不流行，而巴贝斯 虫最常见的传播途径是蜱虫（见图 1B），在许多州都有传播（见图 2）。
