Hike Great Smoky’s Middle Prong Trail for Gorgeous Waterfalls Without the Crowds

About an hour from Gatlinburg down windy, gravel roads is a hiking trail that has something to see nearly every step of the way. From roaring waterfalls along the path to towering trees and dripping water, the Middle Prong Trail is a feast for the eyes just waiting to be explored.

On a blue-sky day in early June, I packed my hiking pack and headed out to see what I’d find. I’m the kind of hiker who loves to know what to expect before I get there. I like to know what the terrain looks like and if the trail is maintained. I love knowing if there’s a really hard portion but it tapers off later on. I like to be mentally prepared. So, the night before, I spent time scouring the Internet trying to find information on the Middle Prong Trail. Nearly everything fell flat. I found videos that showed a dirt road leading to a trailhead. I found people ending up on the Appalachian Trail, and I saw videos of rushing waterfalls. But I couldn’t figure out what to expect on the actual trail.
